Super PAC pitches GOP donors on plan to stop Trump

Washington (CNN)Katie Packer, the Republican operative leading the anti-Donald Trump super PAC, 

Pitched her strategy to stop the Republican front-runner on a call with more than 50 GOP donors and power brokers Tuesday, including those with ties to the campaigns of Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and Chris Christie.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, who was Chris Christie's national finance co-chair, and Brian Baker, a Republican operative connected to the Ricketts family, both spoke on the call, sources who were on the call told CNN.

It came on Super Tuesday, as Trump prepared to build on his lead -- and Republican loyalists increasingly fretted the prospect that Trump will run away with the nomination.

Packer, a veteran of Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign who launched Our Principles PAC, told CNN that "it concerns me" that Super Tuesday's results might not make her task any easier by knocking any Republicans out of the field.

But, she added, "if the worst-case scenario is we have to take it all the way to the convention, that's fine by me."

Still, it's not clear that establishment Republicans have settled on a single strategy to defeat Trump -- a reality Packer acknowledged.

"The question is, do people feel like that's best executed by giving to a campaign that they're invested in or another candidate's super PAC or our effort?" Packer said. "We're not particularly greedy about it coming to our effort, although we have had a lot of enthusiasm for our effort."

Packer argued that Trump has not faced a sustained negative advertising campaign. She pointed out that so far, of the $215 million spent on the air in the GOP race, only $9 million has been funneled into attack ads against Trump -- less than the $10 million Romney's campaign spent in a single week in a single state, Florida, to undercut Newt Gingrich in 2012.

"The reality is that there has been no sustained campaign against this guy until last Thursday," she said.

The new push comes after the group aired ads against Trump in Iowa, but couldn't raise money to continue after Trump's second-place finish there.

Packer's super PAC also ramped up its efforts this week by hiring ex-Jeb Bush campaign aide Tim Miller as its communications director.

The group is already on the air nationally with an ad that launched Tuesday blasting "Trump University." It's airing on CNN and Fox News, as well as more broadly in Florida, Illinois and Michigan -- three key states that vote later this month.

The attacks on Trump could sound like the 2012 hits on Romney's work at Bain Capital.

Previewing her line of attack against Trump, Packer said: "This guy isn't a conservative. He probably isn't even a Republican. He is a con man who is incredibly vulnerable in the general election once Democrats get their hands on him."

After the Iowa caucus results this past week, New Hampshire is the first state on the United States' Democratic and Republican primary schedule and will play a key part in the 2016 election. Here's a look at why Tuesday will be such a big deal when voters go to the polls in New Hampshire: 

NASHUA, N.H. — The New Hampshire primary is the first actual primary in the presidential election process and is considered a key race because it allows candidates such as Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders to find out how they appeal to a broader audience.

This election allows undeclared voters to vote either in the Republican primary or Democratic primary.

While the Feb. 9 contest is the first primary in the nation, it is the second contest, behind the Iowa caucus.

Here is a quick primer on the election. 

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Simply put, it provides early momentum to those who do well. The positive momentum comes in the form of media attention and support from donors, both of which are crucial as the primaries that follow New Hampshire come in rapid fire.

Need proof of what New Hampshire can do for a candidate? Look to Sen. John McCain in 2008. His victory here helped solidify his position as the nominee despite his campaign being in tatters months ahead of the primary.

But, of course, a New Hampshire primary win doesn't promise a ticket to the General Election. Look to former U.S> Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's 2008 primary here and subsequent loss to President Obama in the primaries for evidence of that.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It's not a closed primary, nor is it an open primary.

Here's what that means: In a closed primary only people registered with that party can vote in that state's primary. In an open primary, people registered with one political party can vote in the primaries of other political parties.

In New Hampshire, Republicans and Democrats vote in their respective primaries. However, undeclared independent voters can choose to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primaries.

PRISON FOR HILLARY CLINTON- TEN SCANDALS THAT SHOULD HAVE SENT HER TO PRISON!

Hillary Clinton has been involved in scandals before. Here are some notable ones you may have forgotten.

Chinagate - The Clinton-Gore campaign in 1996 allegedly took bribes from Chinese banks and their government to help their dwindling poll numbers. The Chinese embassy in D.C. helped siphon funds into the DNC. Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown(who was killed in a plane crash), and at Hillary’s instructionreportedly sold seats on department trade missions to China. Joint congressional hearings were canceled after Democrats threatened to bring up Republican campaign issues and then Monica Lewinsky actually saved this scandal from media attention. 

Travelgate Scandal - Catherine Cornelius, a 25-year-old cousin of Bill's was allegedly promised the position of director of the travel office. Hillary Clinton then (indirectly) fired seven employees from the United States travel office and replaced them with associates from Arkansas. Records were either nowhere to be found or incorrectly filed. And, there's a reported attempt to give a White House airline contract to friend. Hillary had the FBI investigate Billy Dale, the head of the travel office, ruining his career who was found to do nothing wrong, but was then audited by the IRS for three years after.

"Billy Dale and his family went through hell thanks to the Clintons, Attorney General Janet Reno, the FBI and the IRS," Irvine wrote. "Hillary's greatest crime was not perjury, it was trying to send an innocent man to prison to justify having fired him and his staff without cause."

“A memorandum by a former Presidential aide depicts Hillary Rodham Clinton as the central figure in the 1993 travel office dismissals, a politically damaging episode that the aide said had resulted from a climate of fear in which officials did not dare question Mrs. Clinton's wishes," wrote the NYT in 1996.

Whitewater Scandal - Hillary and her husband were partners in a shady real estate development firm called Whitewater Development Corp in Arkansas. Accusations of impropriety against the Clintons and others soon surfaced, regarding improper campaign contributions, political and financial favors, and tax benefits. Clinton’s friends and majority owners,  James and Susan McDougal were jailed for fraud, Clinton's successor, Governor Jim Tucker, was jailed for fraud along with municipal judges David Hale and Eugene Fitzhugh who worked with James McDougal. The Clintons walked away unscathed, having apparently done nothing wrong.

Vince Foster Jr. Mystery - Questions cloud the suicide of Vince Foster, former colleague, friend, and White House aid  of Hillary’s who had connections to Travelgate, and the Whitewater scandals. Read the link above entitled "The Man Who Knew too Much. . ." 

Filegate Scandal - Craig Livingstone, director of the White House's Office of Personnel Security "improperly" accessed FBI files on several hundred individuals.

Mrs. Clinton called it a, "completely honest bureaucratic snafu."

Many of these files were on people from previous Republican administrations. Hillary Clinton hired Livingston and is alleged to have looked at the files and requested this move. She was accused by Republicans of  violating privacy rights of individuals she viewed as political adversaries.

Cattle-Futures Miracle - Hillary’s first commodity trade was in cattle futures where she ordered 10 futures contracts which normally cost $12,000 dollars with only $1,000 dollars in her account. This turned into $6,300 dollars by the next morning and after 10 months totaled $100,000, with trading help from James B. Blair.

“Blair, who at the time was outside counsel to Tyson Foods Inc., Arkansas' largest employer, says he was advising Clinton out of friendship, not to seek political gain. . ."  reports The WashingtonPost. 

Robert L. "Red" Bone ran the Springdale, AK financial services company REFCO allowed the trades and later, after investigation, had to pay the largest fine at the time in the exchanges history and was suspended for three years. Hillary Clinton said she was able to make the successful trading because she read the Wall Street Journal for research.

Lootergate - Bill and especially Hillary started to ship White House furniture to their personal home in Chappaqua, N.Y.. The Clintons claimed they were donated, but at only some were proven to be donated and meant to stay in the White House after contacting the manufacturers. The Clintons returned some of the furniture after pressure was put on them to do so.

“GOP lawmakers and others criticized Hillary Rodham Clinton in particular for accepting many presents just before she joined the Senate and became covered by strict ethics rules that prohibit accepting gifts worth more than $50.”

Drug Dealer Donor Scandal - Convicted drug trafficker Jorge Cabrera apparently made such a big donation to the Clinton’s campaign that he was invited to the White house without Secret Service present.

Ponzi Scheme and Political Favor Scandal - Norman Yung Yuen Hsu was a convicted pyramid investment promoter, and major Democratic donor. He contributed an undisclosed amount to Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign. 

“He was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison in 2009 by a judge who accused him of funding his fraud by manipulating the political process in a way that 'strikes at the very core of our democracy.”

The inevitable “Trump raped his wife” story

The Daily Beast took a predictable swipe at Donald Trump yesterday by generating some “breaking news” which is actually a decades old and long abandoned story from Trump’s high profile divorce from his former wife, Ivana. The “story” in question, which Ivana Trump herself refuted shortly after it initially broke, related to comments she made during their divorce where she said she “felt violated” during a particular sexual encounter.

Business Insider offers a brief history of where this tired old chestnut originated.

When the allegations first surfaced in 1993 Ivana Trump issued a statement clarifying that she didn’t mean the term in a “a literal or criminal sense.”

A spokesperson for Trump, who is currently a frontrunner in many polls of the Republican primary, provided a statement to Business Insider claiming the incident was “old news and it never happened.” They also claimed Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana Trump, made up the “rape” allegation as part of an effort to “exploit” him during their early 90’s divorce proceedings.

“This is an event that has been widely reported on in the past, it is old news and it never happened,” the Trump spokesperson said. “It is a standard lawyer technique, which was used to exploit more money from Mr. Trump especially since he had an ironclad prenuptial agreement.”

This story might not have had enough legs to make it to the front page of the weekly coupon clipper if Trump’s attorney hadn’t decided to fire off a particularly ill considered attack on a reporter. (From The Guardian)

A lawyer and spokesman for current Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump issued a series of vulgar threats to a reporter on Monday, while falsely claiming that it was legal for a husband to rape his wife in New York…

“You’re talking about the front-runner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse,” he said.

“It is true,” Cohen told the Daily Beast. “You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.”

If this story brings up any information of value, it’s that Donald Trump really needs to work on staffing up his campaign with people who have some experience in the political arena… and that he might need a new lawyer. I’m not sure what sort of time capsule Mr. Cohen has been sealed in, but those assertions are pretty well off the scale. While it’s never been technically “legal to rape your wife” in this country, there was a tradition in the courts that you couldn’t be prosecuted for it because a wife was “not supposed to” refuse consent for sex with her spouse. But even that antiquated concept has been abandoned for decades. (For the record, a consistent, long term refusal to grant consent by either partner is considered valid grounds for divorce in most states, but that doesn’t invalidate the need for consent to actually do the deed.)

But as far as the “charges” go, Mrs. Trump was pretty clear about the word “rape” at the time, saying, I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense. And for what it’s worth, we should find it difficult to separate that tale from the fact that it came out while the couple was in the process of going through a contentious, multi-million dollar divorce. Trump has popped up to the top in yet another poll this week, this one coming out of New Hampshire where he is drawing double the support of Jeb Bush. At this point it seems that the Left is beginning to develop a sliver of doubt as to whether or not the “toad at the party” will just go away and are getting down to the business of trying to destroy him just to be on the safe side. But honestly… they’re going to have to do a lot better than this bit of stale, tabloid journalism.
